S *Ask the individual to SMILE.
T *Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently) (i.e. Chicken Soup)
R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.
If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency number immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out their tongue. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other that is also an indication of a stroke.

Some people can not stick out their tongue. The dentist noticed that my grandson is missing a muscle under his tongue, and he is physically unable to stick out his tongue.
I have a bad arm from rotator cuff injuries and can't raise it above my shoulder. So these indicators may not be valid for everyone - however, the information is solid. Thanks for sharing - good to know. Perhaps an acronym for this could be changed to START - Smile, Talk, Ask, Raise, Tongue

That is great but what good is it when you get to hospital and are left in a trolly for up to an hour. Or wheeled into the waiting room to take your turn.

Exactly. I waited for over 4hrs . The Dr thought I was drunk . I don't drink. I had had a massive stroke. I was very very lucky I don't have anything major. Just fatigue and a bit of memory challenges.

If my 48yo sons neighbor had NOT called 911 before doing all those tests he would not be here today....CALL 911 first then do all that other stuff.....!! EMTs will do it anyway. He is almost back to 'himself' now two years later thanx to the fast thinking lady next door...!! Thank you Nancy.....!!!
Just even the asking what town you live in or their name or the date can can be a lifesaver, My very young niece (20's) had a stroke and her husband ask her her name, she couldn't answer.
These are good indicators to use. In the case cited though, the woman probably didn't have the stroke at the barbecue. She tripped and fell. Due to the FALL, a blood clot probably formed which later travelled to her brain causing the stroke after she was home. And depending on the size of that clot could well have determined whether she lived or died. The very same scenario recently happened to a friend of mine. The stroke didn't cause the fall, the fall caused the stroke.
ANONYMOUS makes a good point. I was hit in the head at a park gathering and 3 days later lost my vision in one eye. Neurologist did not diagnose it immediately and sent me home from the hospital saying I was having a Migraine. Uh, no... after 7 days I was blind in that eye and an MRI showed I had a clot hid my retina. In any true emergency call 911 for ambulance, you will be seen quicker than going to ER on your own. I understand you still may have to wait but atleast you WILL talk to a doc instead if triage wairing room.
Unfortunately my husband had a headache for 2 weeks before he had his stroke I have never seen this posted as a sign of 1. He had a headache in the back of his head on the right side almost at the nape of his neck. I asked my chiropractor about it who has never been wrong when I ask her medical opinion and she is the one who said it could be the sign of a stroke. Sure enough my husband had a stroke on the right side 2 weeks later leaving him paralyzed and unable to walk now for 4 years. That should be published as a sign of a stroke also
