    10. "Can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen", My mom said many of these sayings. Being a single parent I could not afford a lot, so when my children would ask for something...I sang to my children "you can't always get what you want, you get what you need". They would get so upset, but they did get what they needed. They laugh about it now. It's unfortunate that many kids, do not have respect, morals and values.

    15. I've heard all of these but not from my parents. My mom's favorite though was, "Just wait until your dad get's home". I guess she was teaching me about fear. I was a daddy's girl & I definitely did not want to disappoint my daddy when I heard this at five but later realized I really could not disappoint him. He was my hero, my superman & I've been missing him for 14 years now.

These are ingrained in me and I have ingrained them in my child but I think the line stopped there. What a shame good life lessons are good life lessons lol. My favorite one was My Dad's no matter if the sun was high noon if he said it was pitch black and you had the nerve to say "No Dad it's Noon." His answer was "Don't yon contradict me!" 20. Yes heard many of these growing up and a large number of others. All of them are designed to put a child down not build them up. I tried always to raise my daughter positively not negatively like I was raised. That probably accounts for why I have not spoken to the woman who gave birth to me and raised me in over 10 years but have the best friendship with my now adult daughter.

    3. That is really sad to hear about u not talking to your mother you obviously have missed the message or something!I heard every last one of these probably on a daily basis and i am proud of my parents,I never felt put down, degraded, or made to feel negative in any way. I have the utmost respect for every type of person i appreciate the little things in life! It sounds like you are a spoiled selfish person and I associate that with stupidity, especially because you put on the internet that you are not talking "to the woman who gave birth to me and raised me in over 10 years" you are doing a great injustice to your daughter by not talking to your mother, her grandmother! Its very sad and quite honestly pathetic and disrespectful...which by the way maybe you should have listened to more of those comments as a child you may have a little more respect for " the woman who gave birth to me and raised me"!

    4. Tabitha you are so right in my opinion. Everyone makes mistakes and that anonymous woman apparently does not understand generation gaps. Each generation as parents, we learn new parenting skills. To cut herself off from her mother not only punishes herself and her mother, but more importantly, the grandchildren. I lost my mama last September. I was lying on her chest when God took her home. Years ago, I had a fight with her and would not speak to her and kept my son from her. Thankfully, it passed and we were close until the day we lost her. I hope to God that woman comes to her senses before it's too late. Trust me, if she doesn't, she will be in pain for the rest of her life because when she loses her mama, tbat's it...FINAL. Good luck to her.

    5. Totally agree with Tabitha. I stopped talking with myy father for many years and than had the pleasure of taking care of him the last year of his life. It's been 5 yrs now and I still kick myself for the time I lost with him because in that last year I still didn't get to tell him everything. My mother raised me & I heard everyone of these and I said them to my kids as well. We laugh at it now. Those were the good ole days. :)

    6. I totally agree with Tabitha and just think how you would feel if when your daughter read this she stopped talking to you and found her grandmother. You messed up big time but you still have time to fix it especially so your daughter can learn about her family good or bad still family

    1. ours was jump off the pier, (guess it all depends where you live:) ) Heard a lot of these, however my parents never called me stupid or a moron, just as I never used those phrases with my own kids.. and encouragment always came first, for me it was like, well heck, look at that, they love me even when I do dumb things.... Never used wait till your dad gets home with my own kids, I desciplined right away. Never wanted my kids to dread daddy comiing home, but rather always meet him at the door with a hug and a smile.....

      Delete
    2. I'm so Glad you did that for your husband and kids!

    3. My mom would tell us "I'll KNOCK your teeth down your throat" the thought of it stopped what ever we were doing... Dad use to say (before a whipping) "This is gonna hurt me more than it does you".. I didn't understand that until I had children AND it really does>. Yes I spanked/whipped my sons when they needed it, they turned out to be fine young men. I think discipline takes all forms according to the offense... My eldest son told me once that he would rather have a whipping and get it over with than to have to write sentences (Like I had had to do in school). one of my personal habit sayings that my kids tease me about was "That beats all Ive ever seen". Another one of my parents sayings was "One day you will thank me"... And I have many times over!!

      Delete
    4. I love memory lane. I remember almost all of them including "Be very careful cause what goes around comes around". I used some of them on my kids and now they are very strong and loving. I love and miss my mother who tought me to be loving, strong and independant.

      Delete
    5. I've heard everyone of those sayings, but I'm not sure that my parents actually said them to us. I remember that mom seemed psychic - whenever she was in the kitchen and we were in the living room messing around, she'd always tell us to knock it off. It used to freek my brothers out because they swore she could see right through the wall. Another was when dad would have to discipline us - rarely because mom did most of the discipline (dad was a truck driver and on the road all week); anyway, I grew to fear these words coming from my dad - Go wait for me in your room! Even as a grown up (I lived with him until he passed this past January at 92), I would get a little anxious when he'd come into my room and sit to chat!

      Delete
  32. The ones of you that think these are too harsh or mean to say to your kids must be the parents that don't believe in spanking them. Thats why the world is turning out like it is, parents won't discipline their children cause its "wrong". I got my tail tore up every time I messed up and I turned out fine! I also heard every one of these and more! Spare the rod, spoil the child.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, I got the same thing and I did spank my kids. They are adults now and they turned out great. But, today the law says you can not spank kids. If we could spank kids today the world would not be the way it is now.

      Delete
    2. I will spank mine, in public and I dare somebody to tell me I can't or call the cops! I raise mine how I see fit and nobody is going to tell me any different

      Delete
    3. I know right? I have had people look at me like the devil incarnate because I have no problem disciplining my children no matter where we are. People need to learn the difference between beating your kids and disciplining them. I do the "eye for an eye thing" my kids say something they shouldn't, i pop them in the mouth, they kick something, i smack their leg. Because of our discipline and reward techniques i have great little kids. Very respectful, hard working, sweet kids! (And hell, I had parents who had no problem with using the belt (which i don't unless they really deserve it) and i turned out great and still have a great relationship with them!)

      Delete
    4. The way I see it if the government thinks they can raise them better then let them. But until then I'll raise mine as I see fit if talking to them and taking their things away don't help then that butt is gonna be set on fire. Three strikes and your out !!!! I grew up momma and daddy used every one of these on me !!!! Lol. I use em on my kids and my nephews and nieces and any other child I keep.... I see nothing wrong with it it teaches respect, manners and responsibility....

      Delete
    5. I also heard some of these. I come from a large family ( 11 children ).. and we ALL turned out great. no one is afraid of working. that is what is wrong with America today... too many wimps and cry babies. those woosies complaining about their parents are the ones that are raising the kids that have NEVER lost anything and received a trophy for " SHOWING UP" these kids do NOT know what it is like to be disappointed as a child and now as adults they expect the world to kiss their ass ... as their parents did .

  64. I had a good laugh.......I've heard all of those, but to the ladies who like to spank their kids, this is not the place. This is the place for memories and laughter. My Dad and Mom never spanked us , I never spanked my children. There is no need for spanking as discipline. The only thing you need to do is just plain tell them "I love you" and mean it. Your children didn't ask you to be born, remember that. As for all these sayings, they are great!!!!

When I had my own children I know why my mom said it because they asked why mom so many times thar even after explaining to them why not they still kept saying but why. I didnt cave and they got because I said so just to save my sanity

  67. My mom ...."your going to get it when we get home." this always gave us something to look forward to the rest of the day! Lol "I didn't ask you if you did it .. I asked you to pick it up!" "anything worth doing, is worth doing right!" i was divorced when my oldest out of 4 children was 9. I later had 2 business .. Paid off a home we lived in for 36 years. My mom was a great inspiration for me through the rough times with advice like .. " pull yourself up by your bootstraps , you can't get nothing done sitting and worrying about it!". And the one that always gave me the courage to go on .. "you can do anything and be anything you put your mind too , you just have to want it bad enough to get up and reach for it and have the courage to fight for it and not let go!" but the best advice my mom gave me when I was in a decision giving me trouble was ... "Pray, Jesus will give you strength!" I'm 64 now ... I miss her sayings .. Which I use often with my children and grandchildren. Her name was Golden .. And that she was.

  76. heard these and many more, my favorite I still use is when you call your child and they say "what?!" my reply is "don't what me!" anyway a funny day was when one of the kids toys broke, and the little eyes from it came off, my daughter helped me tie them into the back of my hair and took a pic titled "I always knew mom had eyes inthe back of her head!" lol good times!

  77. I've heard all of these and more and so have my kids. Two that I didn't see as I read this was "tell your troubles to Jesus the parsons gone ashore." and if you wanted something when at the store it was " People in Hell want ice water". There was never a doubt in my mind that Mom and Dad loved us. And we all turned out great. The one thing I have never done though is call my kids names because that was something mom did and I swore I would never do that. I told my daughter once that she was acting like a B---h and she said I was calling her one. Then I had to explain to her that I said she was acting like one, not that she was one. I also never pulled the kids hair cause mom had a thing about grabbing my pony tail and leading me or directing me to what I was suppose to be doing.

  79. It's funny reading that some felt these cliches were meant to be negative, were a negative influence. How sad that they didn't, and don't, know they were done with love, respect and concern. Meant to teach us about life and it's values. I feel so sorry for those that missed the point. If our parents didn't love us, didn't respect us and weren't concerned for us, where else would we have learned how to deal with life? On the street corners with the other kids whose parents didn't give a dang? I grew up less than wealthy and the most heard one in our house was ....'wish in one hand....'. I still tell it to my grandkids along with a lot of others and they have no doubt that I love them with a purple passion. lollllll In fact, they sometimes give me the ending before I've finished the statement. That, my negative friends, is true love.

  83. I love all of these sayings and really they were all said tongue in cheek weren't they ? So funny most of them. I have heard my daughters say " Oh ! I am turning into my mother." I had a few favourites I would use. "Tell me the truth," If they were silent I would ask them to stick out their tongue because they believed that if they told a lie they would have spots on their tongue that only I could see. On the whole my kids were pretty truthful. The best piece of advice I ever received was from my mother, " Never let the sun go down on your wrath" So true.

My daddy said that too! He used to always say, "Don't do as I do, do as I SAY do!" Mom used the "Just wait until you get home!" all the time! Those were the times I said in the backseat and prayed, "Please God, let her forget...please let her forget!" LOL! And how about "A hard head makes for a soft a**!" Daddy used to say, "I don't care if you live to be 100, you'll never be over seven and a half!" Turns out he was right! LOL!

  106. When I did something wrong, or broke the rules... I would hear "Why would a person as intelligent as you do something that stupid? When your Dad gets home, there will be a discussion about this, so you best be preparing your defense." Also: You can give someone the clothes off your back and buy more. You can give someone your last dollar and earn more. However, when you spend your time with someone, you have given them a part of your life that you can never replace. So be selective when deciding whom to share this most valuable gift with, and make sure they are worthy.

I have a couple more to add..When I was crying or pouting my grandpa would say "If you stick that bottom lip out any further I'm going to hang my pail of water on it!" Or Penna Dutch grama~ You best behaving' or your gunna git a licken! Hoosier gramma~"Your gunna get the Dickens beat out of ya!" I always wondered who Dickens was and why was he in my body? I now think it was the "Devil". I'm not going to tell you one more time! "Your grandma/grandpa are turnin' over in their grave" "If you had a brain you'd take it out an play with it!" My mom only said this if we had done something so stupid it was silly! So we always giggled! "Mind your manners!" "If you don't do it right the 1st time you'll just have to do again, so save both of us the time!" "Do you want to be just another piece of bread in the loaf?" "What's taking so long? My word, your slower than molasses in January!" "Stop bawling or I'll give you something to bawl about!" "Don't tell me, I've been on this earth longer than you!"
